Care

How to clean your gold jewellery by hand.

Caring For Your Jewellery

All jewellery will tarnish over time, especially in tropical climates with a lot of moisture, it’s likely your jewellery will tarnish at a faster rate. Keep pieces in a zip-lock or if like us you prefer the sustainable way, keep your jewellery in a cloth pouch to avoid tarnishing.

Some jewellers prefer a cloth pouch because plastic traps moisture and we agree with them. Never spray perfumes or put oils directly onto your gold or gold plated jewellery. We always suggest putting on moisturizer or perfume before wearing your jewellery.

Key Terms

Gold Fill Jewellery - you are unlikely to find 100% gold jewellery, because as an element gold is extremely soft; to strengthen it, and make it more malleable (moveable), gold requires mixing with other metals. Gold fill or Gold filled jewellery is usually 95% solid gold mixed with another metal alloy. Gold fill is therefore more expensive because it has less alloy mixed with the gold. Usually it is a 5% base metal core with solid gold wrapped around it. Essentially our gold fill products are usually 18k which means the product will tarnish very slowly over time and can be cleaned to look good as news. Don’t just go by weight, or how it looks, check our descriptions. You will notice our gold fill earring posts look more delicate, this is to keep the price affordable and ensure the item is not too heavy.

Gold Plated Jewellery- metal alloy plated with layers of gold, 18K will tarnish faster than 24K gold plated jewellery. That is because 24K gold- plated jewellery has more gold than 18K gold plated jewellery reflected in the price. We use 18K and 24K gold plated jewellery which is usually brass plated with gold. The items are sourced from Turkey; made by artisans using an age-old process, which means the items are of better quality than what you find on the high street. Our single Mums then assemble the pieces in Singapore. The unique designs are original and are created in Singapore.

925 Silver Jewellery - also known as Sterling Silver, 92.5 Silver is 92.5% percent silver and 7.5 percent alloy. An alloy is a mix of base metals. 925 silver products should not tarnish if you look after it, as we’ve mentioned above. However, in a tropical climate like Singapore and over time, silver may also tarnish; but the good news is with cleaning, your jewellery can look as good as new.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

Prepare - a bowl, a soft brush (an old toothbrush will do), dish washing liquid or baking soda and warm water. For a delicate piece do not use baking soda as it may be abrasive.

1. Fill the bowl with warm water (avoid hot water)

2. Add in and dissolve a little dishwasher detergent or baking soda (we prefer detergent because baking soda may be harsh)

3. Put your jewellery in the bowl and leave for 2-5mins. We leave for 10 mins if the piece is made from solid gold without glue and fragile stones and setting*

4. Use a soft brush (a soft brush is best because a hard brush may scratch your gold jewellery, an old toothbrush will do)

5. Remove the jewellery and place on a towel

6. Run the soft brush gently across your jewellery especially cleaning hard to reach areas

7. Rinse by running under the tap in the sink

8. Pat Dry and leave to dry naturally on the towel

Voila your jewellery should look sparkling and as good as new!

*Be careful when using any water or detergents on jewellery with glued trims or fragile settings - you may dislodge crystals etc so reduce the amount of time accordingly or do not leave to sit in water at all. Instead add some water to your old brush and run the brush gently across the piece. If in doubt or you have an expensive piece we recommend you contact a professional.
