Artist & Deaf Advocate Mimi Ng

Style Nomads

Meet Mimi Ng, an inspiring individual. She studied at Lasalle College of the arts, worked as an adjunct teacher; and creates the sweetest, most endearing illustrations and clay work. Mimi is also deaf.

Mimi prefers to be referred to as ‘deaf’ rather than hearing impaired. Her disability has never got in the way of her creativity. Mimi is an entrepreneur and advocate for the deaf community. Her passion is to see deaf artists and non-deaf artists work together to foster creativity and understanding. She promotes other artists' work at bazaars and events and wants customers to buy the work not out of pity but because they love the items.

Furthermore, Mimi also hosts workshops to promote awareness and inclusion. Hers is a unique voice, working to change the perception of art from her community and people with disabilities in general. Mimi’s quest for creating a community that cares, without dispensing pity, resonates with what we do. We met Mimi a few years back when she attended one of our jewellery-making training workshops (free to any woman looking for income). We were surprised to hear that finding meaningful work is a challenge for deaf people in Singapore.

Excited to see Mimi create her own project we commissioned Mimi to create 3 Christmas greeting cards with a Singapore twist. Our personal favourite is ‘Kueh Meet Pudding’, check out the work below and see why. We also asked Mimi to help us illustrate a ‘Singapore Santa’. You can see him busy with his Christmas shopping, flanked by Marina Bay Sands below. And Christmas is not complete without ‘Two Angels’ heralding the good news and swapping stars. Her whimsical style of illustration is truly endearing,  transporting us to childhood - creating a world of hope in one small card.

If you are sending Christmas cheer this season do consider supporting our work to help women in need.
